The Tower

The Tower is the middle bit of Sister George. Its the most fun bit, perhaps, so even if it’s not available for rent you might enjoy a look. It’s three rooms stacked on each other, kitchen, bathroom and dressing room, bedroom at the top. An amazing spiral staircase made from recycled old hardwoods join the three floors. The handrails are handmade by a local smithy, Andrew Kimpton at Yandoit. Leadlight by Sandra, double glazing by Miglas. Giant pencil invented by Steve Fiume.

The bathroom feels like it’s out of Pirates of the Caribbean. The map tiles here are from Ortelius medieval world atlas, Egypt, Portugal, Switzerland, Far East. Ceiling is gold leaf painted with red maple leaves, the shower like all the showers in this house has a Showerdome which is an utterly ingenious invention from New Zealand. All the steam created by shower hits the dome top, converts to water as it touches the cool plexi, runs down inside shower. So you stand in steam and warmth, virtually none escapes. I wouldn’t be without them.

The room at the top is rather fun. Green walls painted with woodland scenes inspired by Tjoloholms Slott in Sweden, ceiling painted in mainly grisaille, wouldn’t want to overload the room… That boat may have sailed already.

The white star leadlight is actually an enlarged knitting pattern from Norvegian Lusekoftor. The yellow ceiling is also inspired from Tjoloholm Slott, it’s a building so rich in inspiration I almost fall over with the joy of it all.
